The main reason is pure ignorance of the black culture. Plus the negative stereotypes of black men ie (thugs, dope dealers, etc) from medias such as newspapers, tv and music.

I'm so tired of people blaming this on white hate and ignorance. The fact is, I've treated everyone like an individual my entire life. In my experience, black men in my area are more aggressive, overbearing, loud, pushy, and demanding. NOT ALL. Just most, in general. They expect things from us, knowing it is too much, and then blame us when we don't meet their expectations. Also, the statistics match my experiences. Black men are the most likely to commit a violent crime and are just as likely to commit a violent crime against someone of another race than their own. Criminals of other races mostly prey on their own race. Blacks are the only ones just as likely as not to pick someone of another race, even here where they are the majority. White women commit the fewest crimes of any demographic. So it is logical, not racist, for a quiet little white woman who has been victimized by blacks in the past to be wary of loud aggressive and rude black males approaching on the street.

I don't think that applies to everyone of all races! To some it might be what's portrayed in the media, but for me, I am not afraid of black men... I am afraid of people with no morals or values and psychopaths that look and act normal but are dead on the inside. Other than that I'm not afraid of anything.

This is a very generalized question.

To which races are you referring? What experiences do you have to justify this claim?

I don't think fear of a race unfamiliar to someone is exclusively reserved for black men; there are many cultures who fear ANY race other than their own.

It boils down to lack of experience with the "other" race, lack of education, and lack of effective communication skills.

This is not to say someone who is afraid of another race is stupid, they just don't have the knowledge or experiences to show them there is no reason to be afraid.

I can tell you one thing: Making generalized statements and assumptions doesn't exactly help break down any barriers.

Are we? I might be wary of them if my little white tookus was alone in Compton and there was a big group of them coming at me with angry looks on their faces, but that has more to do with my other senses reacting than the fact that they are black, or even men. I believe I'd be wary if it was a big group of purple women with angry looks on their faces. Or green eunuchs.

There is no accounting for what makes people afraid, but often fear has a basis in ignorance. We're always more afraid of things and people that we don't understand. That's just a human condition. And, of course, our own good sense tells us to be afraid of the unknown approaching us in anger.

Other than that, I'd have to agree with the stereotype theory, and that's just plain sad; a depressing indicator of stagnation in our society. Sigh.
