There are beaches out there - I think Bombay Beach is the name of one of them.
I last visited the Salton Sea in '96 - nobody was swimming or boating but a few people were fishing from the shore. The place looked like a modern day ghost town - lots of infrastructure, but only a handful of people in the area.
I have read that the place was a booming resort in th 60's, but increasing salinity of the water cut back on its viability as a boating & fishing Mecca. If you want to visit a unique, out-of-the-way place, then go visit it. Otherwise you're better off at one of the coastal beaches in Southern California.

RE:
does anyone know if you can swim in Salton Sea, CA? are there any beaches/tourist attractions? thanks.?
Salton Sea is like a big lake as i was told. all the images that i saw online make it look very deserted, unpopulated. i am looking for an actual sea where you can swim, a beach, like a resort. thank you.

There is a town named Salton Sea at the edge of the lake. As I remember there is/was a beach there at one time. The problem is that the lake has been drying up over the years and it's so salty that no one ever swims in it. I'm not sure there are even any fish left in it anymore.
I really doubt you'll find any resorts there anymore.

The Salton Sea is not safe nor desirable for swimming - the 'beach' is made from the carcasses of dead fish, and it stinks unbelievably bad. The salt content is extremely high. I went there and I had to leave within minutes because the smell was so bad. Not surprisingly, there was no other person in sight on my recent visit there (Oct '14). I have attached a photo of me holding a fish carcass. Seriously the 'sand' is just ground up bones of dead fish.

I used to go fishing for corvine in the 60's there was all kinds of activeties there then. roads were made for people to buy property there. promoters would fly you down there to show you what this property would be worth in the future. there were lots of campgrounds to stay at. The farmers that had FARMS THER WERE ALLOWED WATER ALOTMENTS and when the didn't grow any crops they would flood there fields and the water picked up salt and fertilizer and it ran of into the salton sea causing the water to get saltier. there was also the Alamo river that started in Mexico and untreated sewage would flow into the south end of the sea. In the 60's I taught a lot of people to water ski there. There was also speed boat races there, so there was a lot going on.

The Salton Sea State Recreation Area would be your place. Popular activities at the Salton Sea State Recreation Area include boating, water-skiing, fishing, jet-skiing, hiking, birdwatching, and sailboarding. It is in a desert but it is quite a popular spot if you like water sport. It is a salt lake though.

Last time I was there, I'd say about 1995 or so, even the fish were dying. The shoreline was littered with dead fish carcasses, and it smelled terrible. As someone else mentioned, the water is drying up and it's not healthy anymore. I would consider going somewhere else for your beach/resort plans.

I lived in Indio during the 90 s. I took visitors their just as something to see. Even before getting there the smell was in the air. Once there, it was really strong. Yup, a ghost town and a kinda scarey place to visit. It s like nowhere else. I never saw anything or anybody there. In a word...putrid.
