hi! my daughter is also 5 months old. my doctor told me that i can give my daughter fresh fruits as long as i mush them up good and maybe add alittle nursery water to them if they are too thick. i started with a banana and my daughter ate a couple spoons of it....well it constipated her and she didnt have a bowel movement for about 4 days.(the doc told me to give her some kayro syrup and it worked on her) so maybe dont start with bananas, maybe you should start with a different type of fruit. my daughter likes mushed up fresh peaches.
hope this helps you, congratulations on your baby girl....you sound like a great mommy!!!

Babies can be picky. Mix a little in with rice cereal so she isn't over powered by a new flavor. This worked for some foods for my daughter. If she still won't eat it then don't force it just wait a couple of weeks and try again. Their little taste buds are always changing. Mashing a banana and adding water brings it to the same consistancy as the premade stuff in the baby jars. I make most of my daughters baby food and she has always preferred them to the jarred stuff. It's easy to do if you have a food processor. I buy frozen vegetables and steam them 'til they are really soft and then put it through the food processor until it's at the consistancy I want. You can do the same with meats too.

get the banana really ripe first almost brown. if you have a food processor or a chopper put the banana in that.(or a blender) and add aome formula with it to thin it some. this is what i feed my daughter. it is the only way she will eat bananas.
also you can do it with apple sauce. blend it with formula and feed that to her.
we havn't started veggies yet. but she would rather have the fresh made stuff over the baby food. but after a couple of time of the fresh stuff she likes the fruit in the jars now.
she is 4 months.
good luck and hope this is helpful.
oh and you can add cereal to the fruit if you would like. it is the only way she will eat rice cereal is with fruit in it.

There's these things they sell, not sure what exactly they're called. It's basically a little mesh bag made for giving fruit to babies. They don't have to really chew it, just mash on it and suck the fruit through the holes in the mesh so they don't get choked. Of course, when introducing foods for the first time, you want to be on the look out for any reactions that aren't normal. She could have food allergies you aren't aware of, but fruit is so good for kids. Just don't give her say, grapes whole or anything. As long as she can chew/mush it up without any real danger of it going down "un-chewed", she'll be fine.

I am a nutritionist
mashed up fruits are the same (basically) as the stuff you buy in the jar
BUT A FIVE MONTH OLD IS TOO YOUNG TO HAVE ANY FOOD OTHER THAN FORMULA OR BREASTMILK
IT IS ACTUALLY HARMFUL TO BE GIVING YOUR BABY SOLID FOOR BEFORE 6-8 MONTHS
babys cannot digest solid food till at least 6 months of age :)
The AAP and the US Surgeon General among others recommend that infants be exclusively breastfed until "at least" 6 months, which means no other foods, cereals, juice, water, or formula. Babies younger than 6 months lack the enzymes necessary to digest foods other than breast milk. Feeding solids too early increases risks for obesity, diabetes, and food allergies. In fact, most babies are not ready for solids until after 6 months, some need as much as 8 months.
feel free to contact me if you want more information about it

My baby boy loves a mashed up banana. The baby food fruits are a little too tangy for him. I have only tried the real banana and I mix it with a little bit of water to make it a little easier to mash and eat. He is 6 months and started eating them at 5 months.

You could mash up most any fruit and mix it with water so the consistency is smooth, like baby cereal. but only use soft fruits, bananas, pears, peaches, prunes. stay away from citrus.
I was lucky my son loves everything. good luck.
Stay away from yogurt! it has dairy that is hard for babies to digest. but introduce just one fruit at a time, and wait five to seven days in between. To see if she has allergies to them.

I'd mash everything up. I know fruit costs money, but can you get a variety and like 'play a game' out of it (I know.. I know.. she's pretty little.. well, try this a little later on then, K?) You can see what she likes then. Mix up the fruits w/something else on her plate you KNOW she likes.. (she loves veggies you say.. stick a couple in!) Kids like rhymes.. make up a nice little one (nonsense is fine.. kids luv it) and sing to her w/each bite, K? It will raise the kid's IQ no end! g'luck.. w/that beautiful little girl.. melancholia

is she eating table foods or just jar baby foods?
When she is eating table foods like crackers, cookies, etc, it should be okay to let her eat whole fruits that are soft like bannas and sliced and peeled peaches, etc.
If she is still eating jar food, try her with applesauce like one of those little individual cups and see if she likes that. My nephew really liked the fruit yougurts when he was first introduced to fruits.
