the ticking sound occurs randomly and the system will shut down all by itself. If i switch off the main switch(the plug) and on in again, the system will start all by itself as well. I'm suspecting its a doing of a virus so i reformatted my PC but to no avail the problem still persist!!

My computer started making a ticking sound and I noticed it was getting a little bit of sun where it was. I moved it to a dark spot and it improved but still did it occasionally. I took the side panel off the case and noticed it was hotter than normal, so I left the case open and haven't had a problem since.

The ticking could be a bad hard drive. Does it give you a message that windows is shutting down, or does it just go black? If no message, then power may be the issue, if any surge protectors, batter backups, or multiline outlets are between the computer and the wall outlet, disconnect them, plug directly into a wall and then see what happens. Still the same, open the computer and try to pin point the location of the tickin. Replace faulty part.

This is a sure sign of the hard disk failing. Back up all your data and try dont use the system. The more the head tries to read/write, the more the chances of not able to recover the data. I suggest you take it to the data recovery center.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like your hard drive is going. if you reformatted correctly any virus would be gone. that is just from my own experiences. i have 2 hard drives that did the same and i lost all the data by ignoring it for to long. with some money and about ten minutes its an easy fix.

definitely a virus, reformatting is not the solution. you should use fdisk first, some virus can survive formatting. You have a healthy disk since you have reformatted it without problems.

It is either a virus or impending hard disk failure. If it is a virus, you need to download the latest antivirus definition and run it and make sure your computer is not connected to network, otherwise it will get reinfected computer by computer..

If it is impending hard disc failure, backup everything now..... It happened to me and I regret not backing up all of my stuff. Within one week, my hard disc was a goner..

it is a hardwarew problem, causing a protection issue, could be drivers or the harddrive, without hearing the sound it is hard to diagnose. Make sure all your drivers are up to date, and run a disk check on the harddrive

you have too many files open. The virus protection software that I use is AVG anti-virus Free edition. Works great. or you might have to update your computer LOL.
