AIM itself does not cause viruses, but a lot of attackers are using it (and any kind of IM) to transport the viruses they write. It's only recently that people have been able to send viruses over an IM, and many folks have outdated software on their computers that does not know how to protect against a virus that travels in IM. So if you use IM at all, you should upgrade to the newest version of whatever antivirus you use, and make sure you keep your pattern files/virus definitions updated regularly.
