Yes. Bacteria and germs are one concern. Also, if a person swallows their clippings (and many who bite their nails do) those clippings often end up in nature's garbage bin, the appendix, which can lead to appendicitis.

Not particularly, more than it is unsightly. Ragged fingernails that can scratch at tender facial skin if you're not careful.
The human body is a marvelous machine, capable of defending itself from the many invaders that wait just outside it. The stomach is it's first line of defense. Most of the more common germs live and thrive in an alkaline environment, and so the stomach, with it's acid destroys most of them. If you could see the germs that live on your skin, you'd freak out. Millions upon millions of them. Should some of the more nasty ones invade your body, your white blood cells are at the ready to tackle them.
The only bad side of biting your fingernails is that you may rip one down to the quick and open your finger to some of the germs and cause an infection; not particularly life threatening but producing a slight infection that can be annoying and painful.
Carry a nail file around with you, and if you feel the urge to bite your nails, give them a slight going over with the file. After a while, you'll notice how good they look unbitten and and even and you'll stop. I've been there and it helped me stop.

Only if you choke on them!
The idea that there are germs under your fingernails is a good reason to chew them! We are all so paranoid about germs these days and taking way too many antibiotics and cleaning our hands with alcohol wipes, but our bodies are designed to fight germs. If we never let the body fight any germs, it won't be ready next time one slips past and gets you!
Let your body get stronger naturally, don't worry about a few germs, they're everywhere!
However, chewing your fingernails is a sign of anxiety or nervousness so I would try to solve the problem you are having that causes you to need to bite your nails.
