I once hitchhiked from Ohio to Oceanside, California. I was 16 years old. I started to drive but I had car problems, I took a bus across Arizona and it was disgusting. It was easier bumming rides from people city to city. I wasn't poor but it was still cool. I guess the only downside was that by the time I got there (over a week) my best guy friend found himself a girlfriend and I was the third wheel. What a waste. :O(

I was on a job assignment about an hour and 15 minutes from my home, and I didn't drive. I forgot my cell phone, and I was very very tired. I had worked until 5 AM and had to be at the meeting site at 8 AM (same company.)

So, we're doing this inventory job, and the management at the store was being hyper-critical of my work. I wasn't counting in the exact right pattern, even though they couldn't find any errors in my accuracy. She wanted me to go over everything I had done when we returned from lunch.

I took a walk to a gas station and looked at a map on my lunch hour. I decided to start walking on the highway towards home. I had maybe $3 total on me. I tried making some phone calls without much luck.

This guy, who had his two year old kid, pulls over and starts talking to me. He makes up this story about his wife not liking him picking up people on the road and drove off. Then I decided I was tired of walking and started to hitch hike.

About 15-20 minutes later, dude (above) pulls up behind me and tells me to hop in. He then proceeds to give me this sob story about how his wife really just left him with their child and (I was engaged at the time) I should just call off my wedding because "nothing good could come out of marriage" and yada yada yada. He got me within maybe 20 miles of where my car was. I was able to have a neighbor come and pick me up.
