It depends... if you're using a personal email address (Yahoo, Hotmail, Comcast, whatever) you can as long as they're not too big. One or two songs per email, not the whole album--- 10mb is a good rule of thumb for maximum attachment size.
If you're using a corporate/work email address, possibly but probably not. Many companies have policies that these files can't be sent through company email--- too big, and not work-related. The machines that enforce these policies can check inside a zip and see what's there, and will also often be able to catch the mp3 even if you rename it to .doc or something.
So ask your friend to keep the messages small and send them to you at home, and you should be fine!
