Although most people just round it to 1000

Many people here said 1 Gb = 1000 Mb. That is close but not quite.

In the telecommuniations world (data transfer between networks, etc), 1 GB = 1000 MB.

However, if you are talking data storage (hard drives, etc), then 1 GB = 1024 MB.

People! Computer terms are not metric!

1 gigabyte contains 1,024 megabytes. 1,000 is just rounded off. Want proof? Check out the size of your hard drive in GB and in bytes.

Mine is 39,999,500,288 bytes. If it's all based on powers of 10, it should be 40.0 GB. However, it's 37.2 GB. Why?

Because it's all based on powers of 2, not 10!

And according to wikipedia, which I trust more than you, there are 8, not 10, bits in a byte. Again, powers of 2!

1 kb is 1024 bytes
1 mb is 1024 kb
1gb is 1024 mb

so 1 gb is 1048576 bytes

This is because it has to be a base 2 number (based upon a multiple of 2)

2x2 = 4
2x4 = 8
2x8 = 16... 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1024

There are 1000 megabytes in 1 gigabyte. Megabytes = 1million bytes, whereas gigabytes = 1 billion bytes, as u can see, the conversion factor is indeed 1000 (3 orders of magnitude).

one MB- one million
one GB- one billion

and there are 10 bits in one byte if that is ever on a test
