Many insects orient their lives with the position of the sun,
such as bees. Some insects are attracted by the heat that some
incandescent bulbs produce at night (infrared radiation).

To really answer this question, you need to focus on an insect
group or species. They are so diverse. Fireflies use light
as a means to attract and find mates, for example.

The bottom line may just be as simple as saying -> you have to be
a "bug" to know for sure!

a lot of insects navigate by light. By keeping the bright light in a certain position they fly in a straight line (assuming that light is the moon or the sun).

That is the simple programming logic of their nervous system. Lights are a new thing to the insect world, they think it is the sun or moon and they think they are flying in a straight line when they circle it.

Turn the light off, save power and stop confusing the poor little creatures

70% of the energy a light bulb gives off is in the form of heat. Insects like moths or mosquitoes need heat so naturally they would be attracted to it.

With moths, no one knows really knows. One thought is that they are trying to fly at a fixed angle to the light source, which would let them fly in a straight line if the light were far away, such as the moon. Another thought is that they are the victim of an optical illusion that makes them think they are flying towards the dark.

Depends what type of light. Some bugs have coumpund eyes and probably see infared. It could have to do with heat, they could simply be attracted to the heat as well. You must be more specific.

Heat. I heard that moths do it because they think its the moon. Why moths want to fly to the moon, I dont know.
