It largely depends on why it has no design on the back. If the design on the back was worn away, or it was otherwise removed after it left the mint (grinded dorn, cut off, etc.), it has no value. If the lack of design was due to a mint error (either that two planchets stuck together in the minting process, leaving one with no front and one with no back, or that the planchet was badly made and split apart), it could be worth quite a bit - you need to see a coin dealer who specializes in such things to determine exactly how much. Two other explanations are that it's counterfeit (no value) or that it's a sample design or test strike produced by the mint

It sounds like a cooper slug. A slug is just a disk made of copper. Without the embossing, it's just worth the weight of the copper ( which could easily be worth more than a penny! )
