According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Humanism is a broad category of active ethical philosophies that affirm the dignity and worth of all people, based on the ability to determine right and wrong by appeal to universal human qualities—particularly rationality, common history, experience, and belief. Humanism is a component of a variety of more specific philosophical systems, and is also incorporated into some religious schools of thought.
The Black Plague was the most deadly virus to hit civilized Europe. It decimated the population, and scared everyone in Europe. They did not have the scientific understanding on how to treat or prevent the disease. One famous example is the mass killing of black cats; thought to be witchs familiars. The Black Plague is a virus that infects fleas, who live on rats. The fleas can transmit the virus to a human, so more, rat killing, cats would have been the solution, not less. Another thing that scared the Europeans was how the disease would attack religious people and rulers alike, even the grace of God could not protect the people. (Remember the royalty of Europe were supposed to be divine.)
The greatest and longest lasting effects of the Black Plague was the decimation in the population and what permanet change this made to society. For once in history the value of common men was important. The church no longer had a mass labor pool to build their momuntial churchs. With fewer workers, skilled workers were needed, and they could demand more money. This gave rise to the middle class and created the first small business owners.
From a humanistic point of view the treatment of men like pesants and serfs was wrong, these people were treated little better than the livestock they raised. After the Black Plague people became more important, for the first time the value of a worker was raised. For the first time the common man could hope to have a pleasurable existance. Out of this came things like the weekend, and equal rights for women. It became the very foundation of modern society. Most business started as small business, even the golaith oil companies started as a small company that owned a handful of oil wells. Today most business are small business.
Without the Black Plague we would be living like rural Afganis or Iraquis. On a bare substiance level, living in a hovel, with few luxuries, and very little technology.
Humanism empasises the studies of History because it is a study in the better elvolution of mankind. A study of how man started out as a cruel, creature of base instincts to an intelligent, feeling being, of far greater power. Think about how we fight our wars. When millions of Americans died in WWII there was never a public cry to stop the war, to get out. We were fighting for our very National Security, and to stop World Domination. We are in Iraq and Afganastian for the same reasons. To stop the upswing in Muslem terrorists, and to prevent these extremists from trying to take over the world and force their religion on everybody. Yet we aganize over each and every death. When two US soldiers were kiddnapped by Insurgants we started a massive manhunt, and offered $100,000 for their safe return. Most of the world’s population is Muslem, and poor. They envy the rich societies and the zealots hate anyone who isn’t following their beliefs.
Until now most bombing attackes were mass bombings, and every war vechile was manned. Today our bombings are all strategic, we try to limit the casualties to only the combantants. Congress has mandated that the US military develop and use more robotic weapons. As of a result of this we have stand off missiles, robotic scouts, bomb detonating robots, and we are working on making more weapons that can take the human out of the dangerous hot seat.

First -- do your own homework!!!!!
Second -- as for the Black Death -- which outbreak? The one in the 1300s killed off a lot of people opening up farm land and causing an economic boom for those who survived.
The outbreak in the UK during the 1660s led to the Great Fire of London which allowed Christopher Wren to design some beautiful buildings. It also caused Isaac Newton to go into hiding for two years -- leading him to invent the calculus, come up with a theory of gravity and develop a theory of optics.

Much like the name implies... it caused a lot of death. Think "Swine Flu" but without any medicine, doctors (REAL doctors I mean), scientists, television warnings or mouth masks. Obviously, there was the typical "end of the world" panic that seems to be almost normal in modern times, whenever a region had the disease wipe out a significant population. They did however invent the concept of quarantine in Venice because they realized that the disease was originating from ships somehow.
