If it's cold outside and you're only driving the car 1-2 miles to school most days (assuming you go to school 5 days a week for example), 10mpg overall in a car with a V8 doing all those short trips isn't THAT out of the ordinary actually. Short trips where the engine doesn't have a chance to reach full operating temperature use more fuel per mile driven. Warming your car up for extended periods of time by idling it also wastes fuel and makes mileage dip. There's no way around it - short trips will make your overall fuel mileage per tank plummet. Especially when it's cold outside.
