Personally for me, the St. Louis Blues is a stupid name, the Mighty Ducks are as well.

Yes, there is oil in Alberta. Alberta is a large supplier of oil. But overall oilers is still a dumb name.

I've never taken the name "Mighty Ducks" seriously! Whenever I say it out loud, it just seems wrong, like I confused a hockey team with a cartoon.
Flames are HOT!
Oilers are SLICK!
Canucks are...
...So, now we have the Canadian image of a Canuck. Powerful (not superhuman but capable). A defender of Canada. A fighter. A tough guy (in spirit and in body). Sounds like a hockey player.
When Vancouver was admitted to the Pacific Coast Hockey League in 1946, they seized upon the image of a team of Canucks. The name worked. Despite the fact that we don't hear much about Johnny Canuck anymore, the term "Canuck" still represents the best qualities of being a Canadian

I like the Oilers name, I HATE the "mighty ducks of anaheim" That has to be the worst, or the bluejackets. The Wild, what the hell is that even supposed to mean? I also hate the thrashers, it just sounds so high school football teamish....

The Columbus Blue Jackets. At least St Louis is known for the blues. The Blue Jackets are named after a white guy captured by indians who later joined their tribe. Their mascot? A Bee!?

The Wild is pretty stupid. The Lightening, what is that? Ok this is HOCKEY in an ARENA. Yeah it would fit good in Football in outdoors but HOCKEY? Oh and what is bad about Penguins? It is played on Ice, what is more threatening then Penguins ON ICE. I mean a Duck wouldn't be any threat on ICE. A flame would MELT the ICE. Flames is pretty silly when you think about it. The Sharks. Come on they would be FROZEN under the ice. What would their threat be? Heck the Penguins are one of the few that have an appropraite name.
