I teach my students to remember "IS over OF equals % over 100"
Use x as the unknown value and then cross multiply and solve.

It works for every percent problem.

Here are the three different examples:
1. What is 30% of 40?
Set it up as x / 40 = 30 / 100
x = 12

2. 18 is 40% of what number?
18 / x = 40 / 100
x = 45

3. What percent is 30 out of 50?
30 / 50 = x / 100
x = 60

I like this method because the students don't have to worry about moving the decimal. I think it is a very easy way to teach them percentages, I hope this helps.

1) Try a calculator! It's ten times easier.

And....

2) Just remember. If you're given a number that's say .13, just move the decimal back twice. They percentage is 13%!

I hope this helps!

I can help if you actually have a problem. I can work through it and show you how it's done.
