First, define what the "essential job" is. Whatever comes to your mind when you hear that phrase. For me, an essential job would be perhaps saving my mothers life or being stuck in the woods and not knowing how to get out. A dire, desparate situation where you have to pull your wits together create a plan quickly and act even faster.
Now create two scenarios:
One where you have resources you would need to complete the job at hand.
Another, where you don't have the resources, but there are basic items around and you improvise solutions with the random items available.

They are basically asking if you are qualified for the position and if you can perform the essential functions of the job. With or without a reasonable accommodation simply means do they need to alter a work station, hours, etc... for you to be able to perform the duties of the particular position your are applying for. You can go to www.ADA.gov for more information if it will help.

I am not quite sure what your teacher is looking for?
Maybe, if you research what the Jews and Jehovah Witnesses went through in the Nazi Concentration camps, the Jobs they performed, as cooks medics, labor workers, Basically Slaves, mistreated, freezing and starving, may be it will be an inspiration for an answer. Survival, faithful to their God of Choosing? Human spirit of survival? I am not sure I helped, but is is an admirable story for you to research at any time in your life!
