It's not an insult, I have big thighs after doing ballet for 11 years.

No, it doesn't. But too much landing on your feet or, especially, carrying heavy weight can add to this. That's why it is better to work up, not down, to stretch your body, not to shorten it.

Well of course ballet develops muscles in your legs. You have to use them to do jumps and extensions. Without those toned muscles, your legs will not be able to extend to the ceiling. The reason why people think ballet doesn't create muscular thighs because dancers stretch while building muscle. This creates a more slender look.

Your muscle build also has to do with genetics. I know a three year old who has never really done ballet or any sports in her life yet her legs are more toned than a friend who's done ballet for about 10 years. I personally like my "big" thighs. It makes me proud of the work I've done to create them.

Ballet builds the muscles in your thighs - there is no doubt about that - but most ballerinas are very lean. Strong, well muscled, but with lean muscles, not heavy muscles.
Male ballet dancers do develop large thighs, for the same reason that weight lifters do -- because they are lifting ballerinas and because men specialize in the jumps - the glorious jetes that take them 'way up in the air. Take a look at pictures of Nuryev - he has really bulging thighs, and his jump sequences are the probable cause.

No. Ballet makes slender thighs. Tap and Jazz create large thighs.

Having been a professional ballet dancer for 15 years and a teacher for 10, I have seen many girls develop their muscles. I can say the shape of your legs is determined more by genetics than by the exercises in the training. The shape of your muscles can, however be influenced by the style of ballet training. Russian Vaganova style is more likely to create bigger muscles than say Cecchetti or Balanchine style. Be proud of your muscles, you have worked very hard for them for many years. You have great assets to show for your work.

Sugar, what you call "big" after 11 years of ballet, most people call "nice".

You are building muscle. I am a bicycle enthusiast and many dancers look at my legs and ask if I am a dancer. I love to dance, yes, but no, I am not a dancer. Yet, my legs do look like a dancers legs. I think it is a compliment. Dancer's legs are beautiful!

You build up your quad and hamstring muscles, which is a GOOD thing. You'll appreciate those nice thighs when you're older. Trust me!!!
