You got it right so far. But next...to multiply by 1/4...is the same thing as dividing by 4. So take 4x^2/4=x^2 and then -4/4=-1...so you get x^2-1...make sense? I hope I helped...God bless.

Yes 4x^2 - 4 is the answer, but you usually simplify by factoring if you can.

4x^2 - 4 = 4(x^2 - 1) If you multiply this by 1/4 you have

1/4 times 4(x^2-1) = x^2 -1. You can factor x^2-1 too.

x^2 -1 = (x+1)(x-1)

x2 - 4 + 3x2 =

4x2 - 4 because you add together all the factors that are the same (1x + 3x = 4x) (I used x instead of x^2 just to demonstrate)

Then, you would have 4(x2-1) which would be 4(x+1)(x-1) so the answer is actually +/- 1/4 (Positive or negative 1/4)

(1/4)(4x^2 - 4 )

Distribute the 1/4...

=

x^2 - 1

x^2-4+3x^2 = 4x^2 -4

If you multiply by 1/4

(4x^2-4)*1/4 = (4/4)x^2 - 4/4 =x^2-1

dacihak is right. you just distribute 1/4 to your answer (which is also correct, I assure you), and then cancel the 4, so you will have x^2-1
