Has anyone wondered what happened to ICQ? It seems like it just suddenly died out and after a while, everyone starts using MSN instead. Maybe this would happen to MSN soon and Yahoo! Messenger might be the next big thing. But then again, why isn't anyone using ICQ now, why did it just died out then?

ICQ just didn't keep up with technology. Or maybe it just gave up, but it stood by and did nothing to defend it's user base, and now their users have all gone on to use MSN and Yahoo because it's easier to better.

In any case, it's not really disappeared. It's still around, just fewer and fewer people are using it.

Probably because ICQ wasnt really the total in thing. it was like used by a small population. I didnt use ICQ. maybe cause people think its a dangerous place and they rather spend time talking to their friends on MSN, which is more high tech and nicer and so fun to use.

MSN & Yahoo Messengers has much better interface and functional features. Fun themes and emoticons too.
Skype and alikes are more stable in file transfers.
And agreeable that everyone else is on msn or y! - you have to get on as well. (I had to get on MSN because none of my other friends were on ICQ and Y!)

Well, I would agree with some, who say it was popular only in some places..I know I really liked it. :) But on the other hand, I so do not like MSNs and stuff, here, me and my friends are using Miranda IM and Trillian programmes, which contain all of them, ICQ, MSN, IRC,... . It's great, really.

it looks messy and complicated, and didn't update regularly, so users don't like anymore and slowly move to other messengers. If you have tons of friends change their messengers, you'll probably do so.
