Another odd end of the world question. If some poor scientist happens to let some strange matter loose on our unsuspecting universe, how long do you think it would take to (whaddaya call it? devour? engulf? transform?) everything on earth into strange matter? Would it spread outward into the universe? Would this be the end of everything?

Strange matter, even the tiniest bit of it, if placed near or on our planet would eventually crush the entire earth into a tiny lump of matter. I have no clear idea how long it would take, maybe a few years for the whole process.

However, the total mass of the earth would be unchanged, so the incredibly dense, centimeter-wide grain of matter would continue to orbit the sun as our earth does now, and the rest of the solar system, galaxy, and universe would be unchanged.

Fortunately, strange matter is largely theoretical, and there is every reason to believe that it would simply collapse into a black hole, which would radiate energy and eventually "evaporate".

Depends on the composition of the strange matter you are talking about, if most of its composition is benign, no matter how huge the quantity that has been released, nothing will come out of it. You need to be more specific for us to provide you a more definitive answer. :)
