The major street drugs do stay in the baby's system. They are metabolized by the baby and kicked into the gut. The first meconium, and urine can be tested to see of the mother has used drugs.
You have heard of "crack" babies and the HORRIFIC withdrawl symptoms they go through. They can have lifelong problems.
In our hospital, Social Services becomes involved if drug usage is suspected, and the local "Family Services" becomes involved. Yes, they can remove the baby from your custody if use of "hard drugs" can be proven.
Even nicotine show in newborns. They go through withdrawl like anyone who tries to stop smoking "cold turkey." In the newborn nursery these babies are SO irritable and crying. It's sad to see.
If you are pregnant - you should NOT use ANY drug, even over the counter ones without checking with your OB.
