One of the ways to change your mindset from being at work and on the clock to being in your career and in your element is to remember that each new day throws you a curve ball.

Being at work and on the clock, there's no doubt that the curve ball will surprise you, and chances are you'll miss the pitch. Your opportunity for rising above mediocre came and went. You've all seen it - you're at the cashier, the total is $5.05, you hand her a ten and locate a nickle AFTER she's rung up $10 tendered - and she's totally lost.

That was her curve ball. If she had learned to count change, instead of relying on the register to do it, you'd smile and promise to return soon. As it is, you're watching her fumble with the concept of the difference between ninety-five cents and a dollar.

Being in your element and in your career means that you don't necessarily LIVE this work stuff, but you KNOW it inside and out, so that the curve ball not only doesn't surprise you, it opens new doors for you. The only way to get there is to take the job seriously - and a lot of taking it seriously includes ditching the "sigh...8 more hours" mindset. When you get to the point where you're scheduling your work that needs to be done, and trying to decide if you can get it all done in a short 8 hours, you've gone a long way toward the career side.

What's on my mind when I get to work? Same thing that's on my mind away from work - how to solve a particular issue or how to incorporate new ideas. I'm psyched about getting there - there's WORK to be done!

When I first arrive at the office, my mind is on setting an agenda for the day. Calls to make, emails to send, meetings to attend.

If your only thought is how to get out of there, or how to screw your boss over ... you need a new job. Or a new attitude.
