Orientalism is the study of Near and Far Eastern societies and cultures, languages and peoples by Western scholars. It can also refer to the imitation or depiction of aspects of Eastern cultures in the West by writers, designers and artists.
In the former meaning the term Orientalism has come to acquire negative connotations in some quarters; interpreted to refer to the study of the East by Americans and Europeans shaped by the attitudes of the era of European imperialism in the 18th and 19th centuries. When used in this sense, it implies old-fashioned and prejudiced outsider interpretations of Eastern cultures and peoples

There is not a certain characteristic of orientalism.
The characteristics vary with your definition of orientalism.
To Occidentals, the Orientals were the vast unknown areas of Asia.
However, to Orientals of the time, Occidentals appear as Orientals.
My point is that Orientalism is based on how one defines society; Orientalism is loosely based on the unknown and the undiscovered. To orient oneself is to familiarize oneself with his/her surroundings.
However, in today's world, Orientalism, according to how it was first used, has disappeared and is replaced by globalization where people and nations work together.
You should try reading "Orientalism"- I can't quite recall the author's name. :(

If you mean specifically people, I suppose it's not always the case, but usually it would be the eyes and skin tone.
