If I place enough pine mulch over the grass, do I have to dig it up first before making a walkwayor flower bed? Do I have to use something under it / that black netting stuff? If I do use it, can I put it down without digging up the grass as well? I have such a large area to weed..it is hot out, and I am lazy. Is there a lazy mans way to get this done? I have already screwed it up, by placing a thin layer over the grass. Will more kill the grass? This is what I want.

Pine shavings, when used in large quantities, can prevent grasses from becoming established. Round-up now comes with a pre-emergent weed killer and you can spray the existing grass then lay down the black netting over the grass a few days after spraying. Make sure to apply some water to insure the pre-emergent moves slightly into the soil before you do this. After placing the black netting down.... pour on the pine shavings. Just be sure to be careful NOT to get too close to sensitive ornamentals when spraying or laying down the mulch.

Good Luck!

More, like two feet thick, will kill the grass, but pine mulch isn't the best mulch to use (I've heard). As for the black mesh, I put black mesh landscape fiber down and covered it with slate rocks, for my herb garden. Well, the type of grass I have sends out runners and is now growing over, under, and through the mesh. I hate that mesh. If you are willing to use an herbicide, use 'Round-Up' first, over the area, while the grass is actively growing. Then, cover with your mulch, and add a box of red worms (available from anywhere that sells fish bait). They will help work that mulch into soil (or worm castings, anyway), AND till up the ground underneath it. Good luck! Also, check out "The Ruth Stout Mulch Garden," for mulch inspiration.

If you use wood shavings/mulch, the grass will continue to grow through in places and it will end up being a lot more work. The black mulch works really well and is low maintenance once installed.

To kill the grass just put down some black stuff with liquid kill your grass stuff under it, cover it and smother it and do what you want for the walk way!!! I think that will work. I am actually only answering this because I saw that you eat cheese sandwiches dipped in tomato soup, I have never heard of another person doing that, and I want to tell you that you rock!!!!!! That is the best thing ever!!!!!!!

should, there would be less sun and water getting to the grass to let it grow.

and by the way who DOESN'T eat cheese sandwhiches dipped in tomato soup? They should just sell the ingredients in a kit together like a little Snackables.
