Writing is an art, and as any art must be practiced. You can write about anything you find interesting and worthwhile telling about. The best you can do is to combine reading with writing. As you read study the authors style, technique and genre. As you do that try to describe what the story was about, what captivated your attention and think of ways you would change the story to make a different version or perhaps became a character in that story. Possibilities are limited only by your imagination.

If you must write an essay then first sketch an outline shaping the conflict, beginning, the end and the conclusion. When you do that keep the reader in mind by providing a logical (sequential) development of ideas. The reader likes to be surprised however one does not want to spend much time in figuring out a poorly told story.

What ever you do have patience. Sometimes it’s the process and not the results that really matter.

Go and have fun!

imrpove - watch out for typos!!! =)

I think the best way to improve them is through reading a lot.

You can take a class too. English 101 wouldn't be a bad place to start.

Just the fact that you're asking that question means you are on your way!!!

Most people just don't care how they write, and I think it's pretty sad.

At the graduate level, it astounds me how poorly some students write! I can't believe some them actually made it through undergrad. Not that I'm a professional writer, but some of the grammatical errors are quite obvious.

Thanks for asking! It's great to know there are still people out there who care. =)

Use thinking maps to organize your thoughts. A good one is called the bubble map. Write the title of what you are writing in a circle. Then make branches going out of that circle with smaller subjects. Keep on doing that until you get as far as you can get. Then, just write everything in the map.

Slow down with practice, hold your pencils and pens differently, and don't hurry yourself. Also keep your pen or pencil on the same line, till you finish the sentence. Do that for each sentence you write.
