Theres two parts to the equation. The end of the world "as we know it" will probably come a lot sooner than the actual physical destruction of the planet.
I am only quessing but I believe the bible states after the second coming of christ there will be a long period of peace implying that the physical planet will still be here so the challenge for us is to be one of the survivors! If you think about it, that is a daily challenge in some places in the world already.

The major shift would take place in the last day (1000 years or "The Day of Rest") between 6000 - 7000 (Astrological ca lander) We are in the astrological ca lander year of 5766.
