This is what I've heard. If it's true, what's with the ego?

PS: I am an American and proud of it, but not in a cocky kind of way

Guess cause I was born here.

I think all different counties think the same; Like the UK thinks England is the best and Ireland thinks Ireland is the best.
It's where you are from or born that makes you think your county is the best.

Because we can say we don't like our government, we don't like our leaders, we want to change the laws and we disagree with the war(s) we're fighting in and no one (should) call us unpatriotic. After all, thats what America's great about, we have all these FREEDOMS. We can move across country and don't have to register our moves with the government, even though each of the 50 states operate as a single country under the eye of the Federal Government. We have the right to study, not study, work where we want, worship, read, write. Simply to exist however we want so long as we don't infringe on the rights of others. This is an awful lot of freedom, more than almost anyone in the world has except us.

I would like to think it's because of national pride; wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for Americans to say i.e. Iraq is the best country in the world, although I'm sure those born there may feel different. Also, look at the diverse ethnicities of our population; 43 million Germans live here, 18 million Mexicans, 16 million Italians, etc. So apparently there's a couple of people born outside this country who feel this country isn't all that bad :)

Isn't that the question on every other nation's lips? Personally, I think it might have something to do with the isolationist policy we adopted in government for the longest time way back when. I think that having little contact (that we didn't choose to have) with other nations and therefore other cultures led Americans in general to believe that the American way was the best and only way to go about things. Of course, this is not true in many cases. I am in accord with your statement of being a proud, happy American, but I definitely think the States need an attitude adjustment.

think about it this way... we have the third highest employment rate.. the second highest salary, fourth lowest crime rate... and then take into the fact that america is SO huge we are the size of euroupe...if euroupe was one country it would be pathetic cause of some of the countries ... so for the fact that we are so big and can take care of such a large population... still have money left over to police the world and help other countries no other country can compete but technically there is NO "best" country, with the freedoms and rights that everyone has it is just a very popular belief that we are the best...., though i would prefer to live in scadanavia

ok , really this is simple, america is the best country in the world because, Americans all origionate from other countries. We are the best of all countries, with such a melting pot all coming together we represent the world and embrace other beliefs.
Although we may not agree with other beliefs we can except them and still live in harmony amongst each other.
ps this is the short version contact if long one is needed lol

Freedom of course! We have the Declaration Of Independence which is something that no other place has! (Well, you get the point.) And because of our stable economy and the fact that we're more advanced in science/health. The U.S. is thankfully not some disease-ridden, third-world "place" that no one wants to live in.

"And I'm proud to be an American..."

All Americans are not arrogant and boastful. All Americans are not egomaniacs. There are good, compassionate and fair people who live in America and this is one of her most redeeming qualities.

All Americans are not wealthy or even well off. There are many places in America where people live humble lives. Where people live below the poverty line. Where people struggle to pay the rent, stay healthy and feed their families.

America is a nation similar to all other nations in that we struggle with the bad elements of society; greed, crime, abuse, war and celebrate the good elements such as family, heritage, love and peace.

Our country is different in that we have many freedoms that allow us to live our life as we choose as long as we do not bring harm to others. If we take advantage of opportunities, work hard and play fair, we can lead good quality lives.

I hope most Americans are like you and I. Proud of our national heritage. Proud of our culture and way of life while remaining free of arrogance and a desire to humble other nations and people.

I have been here for a year (Im not American) but I like it here. I dont think its the best country in the world though. Even they have everything in here.. People are spoiled of having everything and govt feeding poor people and such but I still think my country is the best (Philippines)..Even its a poor country ..People taking care of each other and theyre true to each other. People dont get bored because they do something else that make them happy....

America is one of the finest country.

Although we may give less governmental (i.e. tax) money per capita to causes like AIDS than some other countries, the fact is that if you include money given by individual citizens, religious organizations and other private contributions, Americans are quite generous compared to most other countries. While I don't think we're perfect, or even necessarily "the best", that is probably one reason that our country IS so great....we don't rely on our government to do everything for us.

Because they have nothing to compare it to, Fox news dumbs down everything about what goes on outside of the borders and most people are content not to go looking for new ideas. I love my country, but I definitely don't think it is the best in the world.
