You can, apple does a good job of hiding the link.

I felt the same way but I finally caved and took the pair. When you install just uncheck making Itunes your default player.

It hasn't bothered me & I played with it a little the other day & it is kind of a neat program. I opened an MP3 and fully expected Itunes to try & make itself the default player but it didn't and it has a nice interface. When I get a chance I am going to look at it further.
