I've got a new white t-shirt with some red color in it that is a touch too big. I'm trying to shrink it a little by washing it in warm water and then tossing it in the dryer.

Will this be an effective way to shrink it, without causing colors to run? What makes colors run anyway? Any other good tips on shrinking clothes like half a size?

I'd set your colors in cold water and salt first, and then after setting the colors, I'd try washing in hot water. If your colors do run after that, DO NOT PUT IN A DRYER, just soak your shirt in cool clear water, changing the water several times a day and after doing this for several days, the run color will be gone.

I'd wash it in the cold water and add some vinegar to the wash water. Most bright colours will run a bit in any temperature of water but they run less in cold water. And the vinegar also prevents the colours from running. Try adding vinegar when washing jeans if you want to keep them a crisp blue. I've done it with mine and it works great.

If you want to shrink it, put it in the dryer on a hotter setting than recommended. I don't know if it will shrink a whole size. That depends on the material.

Most clothes are bought pre-shrunk now adays, sorry. Just buy a smaller size. As for the color, all color will run a bit when the garment is new. There's just left over dye and stuff. It's inevitable.

There are products on the market now that are called color guards, they are like dryer sheets that you drop in the Washing Machine and as the colors run they get caught in the sheets not in your clothes! I actually think one brand uses the trade name COLOR GUARD but I'm not sure, I am sure that they work!

Wash it in hot water.

No, the colors won't run.

It depends on the material how much you can shrink it.
