be straight up and tell the truth

Why do you owe anyone an explanation? If it is a prospective employer, tell the truth but don't whine. As someone who has been in personnel and has also been fired, the truth is that it is illegal for any employer to give out any info about you. When checking references, the prospective employer can check to see when you worked for a company and they can ask, "Would you rehire this person?" Anything beyond that is crossing the line. Remember, when one door closes, it is an opportunity for another to open.

Don't unless you are asked. If you are asked tell the truth, more then likely they are going to call your former emloyer anyway. Or you could not tell them you worked there??
