A nation with freedom must be governed by laws. If not, the freedoms of each and every person within that nation would run the risk of their own ideas of freedom being infringed upon.
A society cannot survive without some type of law and order.
If we were all free to do anything and everything that we desired at any moment, the Earth could not exist. There have to be checks and balances for any society to exist.

Interesting...your question seems to imply that there is such a thing as "absolute freedom". This is good theory, but I don't think you can see it in practice. You may want to go shoot a gun or swing your arms every which way, or drive 120 mph to work. But your personal freedom to do such things must be limited because, quite practically, there are others around you who also want their freedom as well.
So it would seem the purpose of law is to both locally optimize personal freedom and globally maximize the freedom of all, but finally neither the individual nor the society can be completely free.
Hmph.

We are free to be ruled by law or to go to jail if we choose not to be ruled by law. How do you like that for freedom? I guess you also have the freedom to ask this question.

Well, yes. There is freedom but it's not "absolute". You have to keep in mind though that most laws are meant to protect the citizens not limit freedom. Then again, some countries have laws that are meant to limit the freedom of its citizens. Interesting question!

I think there is. Knowing what you can and cannot do allows you freedom to know where you stand. If there are no laws, than one can do whatever....and therefore someone could do whatever they please and infringe on YOUR freedom, and then were would we be? Atleast with laws in place we have "law enforcement" to protect everyone, and therefore those that choose to abide are free to do what they need or feel they must do, but stay within the law. Those that choose to break the law are there fore not free and have their rights stripped away from them, because they infringed on those that were free and acting correctly. Hope this makes sense...... It's just me thinking.

No there is no true freedom in any place that has a goverment. But its a good thing because most people are afraid of true freedom and in the same respect most people lack the morals to handle true freedom. I suggest you watch the move "Easy Rider" it might beable to answer some questions you have about true freedom.

Without laws we revert to anarchy. Look at Somalia. There is no national government and warlords run the place. Murder, rape, and robbery are common. I wouldn't call living in fear freedom.

All nations run under law and etiquette. They evolved as the needs of the people needed them to.
Freedom is found within yourself.
Freedom can be found even to a prisoner in death row by state of mind.
