my budget is no more that $1,000; looking for use in college and want it with at least 512Mb RAM and fast enough processing speed for watching movies/DVDs and listening to music (so like 2.4 GHz at the minimum); at least 3 USB ports; wireless card enabled (either internal and/or port); a DVD-ROM drive; long lasting battery (8+ hrs); prefering 15" screen but can be between 13"-17" (prefer widescreen version); good video and audio cards; at least 60-80GB hard drive

for whoever can name the laptop, its price, where to purchase, a URL, and list of specs (that fall in range that i have given); the best one (not necesarily the CHEAPEST one) will be awarded 10 points.

NOTE: if there are better options out there and/or if i had placed an impossible range, plz also point that out (am not really the genius when it comes to computers)

thank you for helping me out !!

yeah Steve ^_^

the long lasting battery (8+ hours, precisely 8:32), at least Dell promise this with the 9 cell battery for its Inspiron E1405 (btw, idk under what conditions). This notebook fulfill all demands except gaming (but this isn't required) due to the GMA 950 that can't be upgraded. But all in all a powerful and well transportable notebook.

n.b. the E1505 with 15.4" screen can not fulfill the demand of 8 hours running on battery.

I think you can consider a Gateway MD2601u, it look quite pretty and cool in red(check the images). It has almost all the things you would want, a dual core processor (AMD Turion™ X2 RM-72* dual-core mobile processor), 3gb ram, 250 gb hard disk (you can buy a external hard disk later if you want to store more stuffs since they are getting really cheap.), and a decent graphic card (Ati radeon HD 3200 is much better than Geforce 9100m, intel GMA 4500MHD, X3100). It is not very small though (15.6 inches) but a 14 inch laptop would usually cost more and netbooks (12 inches or smaller) does not have a dvd drive and have low specs, thus they can only surf the net and do word processing.

I just got one for the same reasons.. Dell has great coupons on the Inspiron E1505. They start at $749 but you can upgrade the battery and the video options and still be under $1000.. Not bad for a Dual Core laptop, which is what you will need if you want to watch movies, play games, burn cd/dvds.

My advice is go to HP.com and look at the HP Pavilion or Compaq Presario Laptops. I got a sweet Dell Inspiron laptop for 800.00. Lenovo (IBM) has great secure laptops with fingerprint scanners for under 1000.00. Just buy from web sites its alot easier. Hope this helps

check HPshopping.com it's Hewlett-Packard's online store., i don't remember all the specs right now, but the Pavilion DV2000T just under $950 and the DV5000T slightly under $1,000 are what you might be looking for.
