Any paramedics/EMTs out there? Could U please tell me what U like about your jobs?

I am considering taking a emt-basic course, please tell me what you enjoy or even what you dislike about your job. Thank You

First thing I would ask is do you like helping people? That is the best part of my job. I like to interact with people on a daily basis. You have to be able to communicate with all types of people to really like this job.
I would say the biggest dislike is when you get a call for a kid. Those seem to be the worst. I have pulled dead people of cars and have seen some pretty major trauma but when a kid is involved things take a different turn.
Finally, if you are deciding that EMS is the field for you; I would definately suggest continuing on to the paramedic program. The job market is so much better and the ability to expand into other types of careers is excellent.

One thing I really like as an EMT is seeing how thankful family members are when you have helped out their loved ones. I guess where it really gets to me are the moments where you go "I'm an EMT" and your training kicks in and you are really going through stuff like it's second nature. Sure there are and have been the times where you have to see something that is very unpleasant, but that is part of the job.

If you have never been incolved in health care, taking the EMT- Basic course is a good place to start. If you can, try to find a volunteer or part- time service in your area to begin in the field. I wouldn'y consider going up to paramedic until you have tried working as a Basic for a while.

I was an paramedic for Chicago Fire Dept and a private ambulance company for 2 years. I liked helping people and the training is definitely helpful in your household. I disliked carrying heavy people. I am female and sometimes they were just really really heavy. I also got enough of the trauma so I decided to change careers. If you really think its for you go for it... but go all the way.
