Jerry Grote was the principal starter all three years and made the 1968 All-Star team. The other catchers in 1967 were Greg Goosen, John Sullivan and Hawk Taylor. J.C. Martin joined the club in 1968, and was supposed to platoon with Grote but was injured early on. Gil Hodges liked to keep three catchers, and in 1968 and 1969 the third catcher was Duffy Dyer, who however was limited mostly to pinch-hitting duties (he pinch-hit a three-run home run on Opening Day 1969).
Also, Tommie Reynolds briefly served as a catcher in one game in 1967 where one catcher pinch hit for a second and was replaced for a pinch runner, wherupon Grote took over behind the plate. Grote was later thrown out of the game for tossing a towel at the plate umpire. Wes Westrum scrambled for a replacement, eventually selecting Reynolds, even as Ron Swoboda (who sometimes helped warm up pitchers in the bulllpen or between innings while the catcher was putting his gear back on after batting/baserunning) was struggling into the shin guards. We will draw a kindly veil over Reynolds's performance, but mention that the Mets lost the game on what was charitably ruled a wild pitch.

Jerry Grote was the starter. The old Texan backstop catcher. Called a great game behind the plate and tough as rawhide. The backup catcher was J.C. Martin.
