The best sword makers are in Japan. They do accept a limited number of apprentices each year.

There are a few blade forums on the web - I have put in links below.

I have made a sword at a local foundry. The materials I used were some old car springs and a long bolt.

I heated up the car springs I cut the top of the bolt off and worked the bolt in between the springs. So the piece of the bolt with the thread sticking out was at the top of the sword blade. The blade was heated and hammered on an anvil. More accurately it was whacked around (sort of folded) a few times and then beaten into a double edged sword shape. Finally I quenched the thing and ground the edges to get a cutting edge. The work was hard and hot and I am ignorant. The hilt and hand guard were then threaded on the bolt and secured with a nut.

It looks like something that had been through the Orc wars and then used in a demolition match - better luck with your creations.

Start basic blacksmithing first after an intensive year switch to knife making and do it intensively for 2 or 3 years.
Then graduarte to making swords.
no one started smithing swords as a first project. It will not work out 99/100.
Look up Don fogg on the net he might pass you along to some superb knife making websites.
