We're Having Problems With Our Sex Life; Should I Have Penis Reduction Surgery?

Posting Date: 01/19/2001

Chad: I read an article about penis reduction surgery. Do you know anything about that?

I'm a 25-year-old newlywed and I guess I have an abnormally large penis. We are having trouble with our relationship.

Dr. Dean: I've talked to newlyweds with this problem, and when we get down to numbers we find out that the man's penis is entirely normal or even on the small side.

Discomfort and pain can occur regardless of the size of the penis, if your positions or technique are wrong.

When she sees a doctor, a woman has a speculum put in her vagina. She is capable of having babies. So the girth of your penis is not the issue.

A penis can be uncomfortably long for a woman's canal. Lubrication, position, and a man's sensitivity to his partner's needs almost always resolve this.

Communicate with her about which moves hurt. And allow her to get turned on, to get her juices flowing.

I would never recommend surgery. Such a drastic solution is unnecessary. Reducing the length would require detaching the penis from the pubic bone, which is also what we do to increase the length. It's a very unreliable procedure.

Charlie, another caller: I'm a pharmacist, and I've been asked about the problem of a too-long penis many times in my career. The solution is to put a small, foam rubber donut around the base of the penis.

It works very well.

Dr. Dean: That's a good one.

Hitting the woman's cervix can be very painful to her, but in the throes of his excitement, a man may have a hard time limiting his moves. This is a practical way he can do that.

Remember, it's foam rubber you want. You don't get these at Dunkin' Donuts.

No.

Surgery should be reserved for more drastic situations. Your fiance's vagina will adjust over time to accommodate. Until it does, be gentle. Start slow. Use lubrication to ease physical distress from friction.

Consider different methods of stimulation to produce the effects desired from sexual contact.

It would be best to consult with experts on this as well. Urge her to ask her Gynecologist on her next visit, about what to do and how best to adjust to each other.

Save surgery for important things like Vasectomies and life-threatening illnesses, if necessary!

No, have her consider getting a much safer cosmetic proceedure to get a labia reduction and even an episiotomy (they do those when you give birth) would be safer than reducing the size of your penis- which is a series of soft tissue with veins and arteries.

Before you consider slicing the salamai, why don't you and your finace' visit a doctor together and do not get just one opinion. Find something that might work for both of you, and do it together.
