I have been blackberry user for over 3 years now. Used all their models including the latest one.
Here is some useful information:
1) It is a PDA+phone which is quad band. This means that it is truly an international phone and is compatible with the various networks that operate on different frequencies across the globe.
2) You can receive emails (like from hotmail and yahoo) if you have signed up for POP3 access from your email provider. The emails will automatically show up on your device. If you don't have such a provision, then you need to connect to the internet(on the phone) and then access the emails. this is little tedious.
3) You can use the browser on the phone to borwse the internet. It is on small screen, but it gets the job done for basic stuff.
4) When you travel international, you have to ensure that your wireless provider (Cingular, Verizon, etc) enable it for international use. This means that there maybe an international plan that you need to subscribe to and then pay for separate air-time whenever you make calls from South America. May not be a huge difference in cost, but you want to check it out.
5) Their latest models are either full key keyboard (recommended for first time users) which is slightly broader or smart-key keyboard wherein the system learns the most often used words. The later takes some getting used to, as 2 alphabets exist on one key. Both are good, the choice is personal.
