Gaydar is an ability that Gay people develop to recognise one another. It's a portmanteau (two words joined into one) and it stands for Gay Radar.
The idea is that as I walk down the streets of Teheran, I can look at other men and instantly recognise if they would like to hang with me.
I'm sorry I shouldn't have written that but there it is and there it stays. I'm possibly reading too much into this profile name Nabil H but I imagine that you grew up in a culture which was subject to Shar'ia (sp?)? By the time I came into the world (in the UK), Homosexuality had just been decriminalised and Capital Punishment had all but disappeared off the books a decade or so earlier. Consequently I was alarmed to read your post to Everybody Loves Chris' question.

As a terminally gay male (I'm like 7Up, never had it, never will) I believe the other 2 responses hit it on the mark. Gaydar in itself is simply a term...it refers to the 'ability' of a person (gay or straight) to pick up on the vibes (whether they are physical characteristics, mannerisms or even subtle 'looks') that denote someone is gay.

Is a slang term for an ability to sense whether a person's gay. Example: Someone I once came across was known by a coworker to be gay. She asked me if I noticed anything "odd" about him. Told her "yeah, the dudes gay."
Told her that when a guy looks at me like Rosie O'donnel looks at a pastry, ya know something's up. :-D Even a straight guy like myself can make the connection. Not havin a bag of cheesburgers, there's only one other reason for the attention.

It's the ability to see that someone else is gay...usually done by eye contact that is a little longer than normal.

The post before me pretty much sums it up. But I would also like to add (being gay and knowing from experience), that you must ASK TO BE SURE!!!

It's a feeling that even straight people can get. It's when you can tell someone is gay by the way they carry themselves.

It's the way girls and gay guys tell if someone is gay, bi, or straight, but it's harder to tell now a days because of guys being metro.
