This problem just started today. I took my computer into work so the IT person could work on it (my computer was taking forever to load windows... sometimes up to 20 minutes). She couldn't fix it, but even worse, now I can't boot the thing up in any mode but safe mode. Even when I hit F8 and select "Start Windows Normally," it will load only in safe mode. The IT person is out of town until Tuesday now, so I can't take it back to her and ask what the heck she did. Any ideas?

Insert your xp disk, and boot from it by pressing any key upon boot.

Go through all steps that you would normally go through for an install it will tell you it found a copy on windows and ask if you want to continue.

Press R and it should start to repair the copy on your computer.

This is the most valid answer to such a vague question.
There are many things that can cause this from corrupt system files to incompatible hardware.

Don't take it to that IT person again obviously they don't know jack.

if you have the windows Operating system Disk, its better u try to reinstall the copy of your operating system.
This will erase all datas from your computer. if it has no important files in it Do it and it will help u . when computer boot up (initial black screen, if its a dell computer it will show dell logo), keep tapping the f2 key and u will be able to get into your PCs BIOS, blue screen, change the boot sequence. NOTHING ELSE, Do not change anything else JUST THE BOOT SEQUENCE...!! if by accidentally you changed something else , just don't save it , press Esc and exit . Once the boot sequence is changed to this 1st CD ROM, 2nd Floppy Disk if Any, 3rd hard disk . Save it and exit
before restart insert the original Windows Operating System into the Drive, It will promt you to press any key to run from CD and the fresh Copy of Windows will be installed , just follow the Instructions.
Warning:: doing this will erase all of the datas from your hard drive

Hm sounds like a registry problem.

When it starts in safe mode, make it boot up in MS PROMPT.

Type this when you get to the black screen: scanreg /restore

It should scan your registry and restore it to how it was and hopefully it will repair it.

If "start normally" starts in safe mode try other options. Who knows, "start in safe mode" might make it start normally =)

Destroy it and get a new one. If you ran Linux, you wouldn't have that problem ;).
