Yes, watermellons grow and vines on the ground and they produce blossoms, flowers. The blossoms are either male or female. Therefore, just as in animals, it requires a female and a male to reproduce. This is accompolished by the male blossom fertilizing the female blossoms. This is called polinization which is normally accompolished by bees that fly from blossom to blossom while collecting pollen. Several other vegegtables which grow the same way are cantolopes, squash, cucumbers and I know I have forgot dozens.

Yes. You get flowers first before the watermelon grows. The watermelon will start as a small bump on the stem of the flower, and grow.

Well, they really start as seeds, which grow into vines, which flower. So the real question is where do the seeds come from? A watermelon of course! But where do watermelons come from? Well, they really start as seeds, which grow into vines...

Please, don't ask about seedless watermelons, because they come from seeds, too. Ah, the wonders of hybridization!
