I really enjoyed Wicked, by Gregory Maguire. It is a phenomenal storyline that follows the Wicked Witch of the West, in her life before Dorethy (from the Wizard of Oz, movies and books) came into the picture. It is a great book!

I used to a be huge Mary Higgins Clark fan, Stillwatch, Weep No More My Lady and Loves Music Loves to Dance were among my favorites. However, after a while, her novels got a little predictable...
--If you liked Mary Higgins Clark, try reading some Agatha Christie classics. My favorites are the Hercule Poirot novels...Murder on the Orient Express, Murder on the Nile, Hallowe'en Party are some of the best. The Miss Marple books are good, too...The Body in the Library and my personal favorite, Nemesis.
--Also try some of Joy Fielding's first suspense novels, See Jane Run and Tell Me No Secrets, both excellent.
--Another good suspense author with some romance thrown in...Nora Roberts. Never picked up a Nora Roberts I didn't like...Genuine Lies, Montana Sky, Carolina Blue...all excellent. Those will get you started, but ALL of her romantic suspense books are great.
--Sandra Brown...Chill Factor, White Hot, Fat Tuesday, Envy
--Linda Howard...Mr. Perfect, Dying to Please and Open Season are all really good.
--Jonathan Kellerman...all of his books are fantastic, but the Alexander Delaware books are the best...I'd start with When the Bough Breaks.
These are all authors I love who keep me on the edge of my seat. I think you would enjoy them. I have read a lot of books in my time, pretty much every genre so I try to match the person based on what they like to read or have read in the past. I think you would like the authors above. I grew up reading Mary Higgins Clark and eventually moved on to the authors above. All of these books are mysteries, all suspenseful but different than Mary Higgins Clark's works, I think you would enjoy them.

Just read The Last Days of Dogtown by Anita Diamant. Very good book about how some poor women, somewhat outcast, survive. She also wrote The Red Tent which was popular. Set in 1800s New England. A mixed group of women start living in run down abandoned houses and make a life out of it. Sad and uplifting.

George RR Martin " A song of Ice and Fire" series, It's filled with great charecters that you can relate with as well as the best charecter development I have ever seen in a book. It is a fantasy about people living in the era of blacksmiths, kings, knights, and the occasional magic/sorcery. A really good series to read. Also Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Stephan kings dark tower series.

If you're a fan of those thriller suspense type novels, you might want to look into Harlen Coben. Tell No One is a fast paced entertaining read. It's the best one I've read of his works.
Also, books like Brave New World, 1984, and Animal Farm might appeal to you as well.
Happy reading! :)
