My washer is a kenmore direct drive and after some research I believe it might be the clutch or the rod that runs up the center of the agitator. Any thoughts?

The Agitator is stripped. The post that actually agitates the clothes sits on a knurled post . When you overload the washer time and again (I've done this ..voice of experience) you strip the plastic innards out of the agitator. Get a new agitator from any Sears service center.

I had a Whirlpool for 15 years and the only thing ever fixed on it was the agitator....turned out there is a (very inexpensive) washer or gasket on it that had worn away. A tip might be if you find what looks like rubber shavings under your washer. (I thought at first I had mice!!)

Take it easy on loading it up. Might be the belt.
