when i crank my car it makes an awfull sound then it stops after i press the gas for a couple seconds.. there have been a few times it never made the noise also with the noise it wants to die out at first (and has )

its a 1984 buick skyhawk

thanks.. i talked to some one and they said it sounded like a belt and that i should replace all of them.. anyone know how many belts and which kind are on this car ?

Check for dead battery, or, if you wish, near dead battery. Hook up a boost.

if its a screetching noise it may be the alternator belt. If it sounds like gears, it is more than likely the starter staying engaged after you let off the key. Check the belts first, have someone stand near the motor with the hood up when you start it. If thats not it, I would guess its the starter.

it will have two to three belts depending on if it has air conditioning and they are not to hard to change if you have worked on cars before. if not i reccomend buying a repair manual with step by step how tos in it and it can be done by a novice in a hour or so

it sounds like the selonoid is sticking and not letting the starter disengage. your best bet is to replace the starter and selonoid. Not positive on price but shouldn't be more than $50.00 to remedy the problem.

You have a worn or loose belt, it likely needs replacing.
