As a friend of Bill Wilson, they mean the world to me. You can also think of them this way....God grant me the serenity to accept other people, places and things as they are, give me the courage to change myself, and the wisdom to know that the only thing I have control over is turning my will and life over to you.

How about this? "Now that I know that I'm no wiser than anyone else, does this wisdom make me wiser?" Hugh Prather (Notes to Myself)

When asking for serenity, I am asking for the peace I need to accept , when asking for courage , I am asking for the strength to make the change, when asking for wisdom, I am asking for understanding that there are some things I can change and others I can't.

This passage is trying to tell us that there are things beyond our control and the sooner we accept that, the more at peace with ourselves we would be. But so as to avoid misinterpretation towards pessimism and inambition, it goes on to tell us that there are things we can indeed change and control.

Simply put, know when you can and cannot do something. If it's the former, act! If it's the latter, smile, shut up, and sit down.

Its means to me give me the piece of mind to accept all things in life whether being good or mind, And stop trying to fix things in life that you have no control over, And also ask God to help you get wisdom to deal with the things that you arent certain about.

To have peace with the things that are. What one cannot change should not be a burden upon one self. Have the courage to change that which you can. And have the knowledge to know the right and wrong way to change things. Knowledge is power!

This serenity prayer (which starts with 'God grant me' I believe is to teach us to depend on God and to seek him for wisdom and courage. We cannot do this on our own, that is why we must go to him. He is our best friend.

Oh wow I got a little decoration thingy with that on it years ago from my grandmother. I believe it means to always do your best but know your limits, so your heart does not become to broken, yet be strong enough to brave the things that you can change! :)

I believe that is the Motto of most 12 step programs. I think it is about learning to be accepting of your shortcomings and weaknesses, and to give yourself over to a higher power.
