Eye contact, hands down. I may not give them money but I always make eye contact and speak. You, yourself know what it feels like if someone dislikes you, or avoids eye contact, all the non-verbals of showing disregard for another. It generally makes one feel uncomfortable at the very least momentarily. What would it feel like to feel this way day in....day out....over time it would destroy a person. So, I just made a short answer long, but the moral is make eye contact, smile, spread some love around, treat all human beings with dignity.

Look them in the eye for a second and simply keep on walking. If they call out to you ignore them and keep on walking. They are not worthy of your attention and must be looked down upon in order for them to get the picture. If this were a communist country, they'd be working hard in the fields or busting their *** in the barracks, but since we in America love freedom, beggars come with the deal. I've seen some young strong beggars that could make exceptional soldiers or hard working laborers. Even the older ones could sell drugs or sell their bodies to prostitution. It's their fault for not taking initiative. The choices are there, but they choose to sit and beg instead. So in conclusion, beggars should be looked down upon and made into something contributive to our society like soldiers or something that doesn't require college or school education so they won't use that as an excuse for being beggars.

I pass by and take a look. Most faces are common to the area. Two guys pulled over across the street from the university one day, popped their hood and asked students for gas money. I left the university 4 hours later and they were still there. In fact, one guy was counting how much money he himself had collected. Others dress like they are homeless and actually make a pretty good living panhandling. During a panhandling crackdown a Cleveland reporter a few years back reported on a panhandler who claimed to make $30k per year pandhandling. Wonder how he filed his taxes?

I don't look away, First of all these are people too, If i have the time I will talk and ask what brought them to this point in life. In the job I have I always carry food with me. So instead of money I will give them a sandwich and a drink. I gave a homeless man in Washinton D.C a sub-sandwich. He thank me very very. I did watch him eat most of it. Seeing he was having trouble eating it. I gave him a soda. Which he thanked me again. He told me that was the most he had to eat in 4 days and he could not eat it all, It's a sad world that we have when Our very own people in our country have to go homeless and hungry. I always look at things in reverse, in cases like that, That could be me, my family, you or your family member. And then you have people out there just plain using the system. So it's your call on what you want to do. That's mind...

If I have never seen them before and I know that they are not professional beggars I always hand them a couple of bucks and say " God bless you" with a nice smile and direct eye contact. If I know they are homeless with no chance of a normal life, I bring them coffee once in a while on the really cold days and a few bucks. I have even given one particular man food for his dog and a dog coat. I work downtown and see the same guys and girls over and over and I know who really needs the care so I make a point of helping my little corner (literally) of the world. Most of these people are not mentally able to help themselves. You could hand them a job, clothes and a furnished apartment and they still wouldn't be able to take care of themselves. No one makes a choice to decide to be homeless, they only choose to continue to be homeless and only God knows why.

I usually give them change, so I will make eye contact. But if I know I'm not going to stop and give them anything I won't make eye contact because I'll feel to guilty as I walk by with my Starbucks.

It really depends on who is doing the panhandling. If they are impaired on drugs or alcohol, then I just avoid them. If they truly seem to be in need, then I stop and talk to them for a minute or two and give them some money if I can. The reason I don't give money to junkies and drunks is that I refuse to support their addictions, including cigarettes...and they always seem to have enough money for smokes and drugs, but not food.

Don't give money to beggers, because it just encourages them. A friend told me about these two women who begged outside the building where she worked. 14 years later, those two women are still there begging! Ignore them.

I tend to look away. Only cause I wish I could give them money......but I am barely making it like most people in this world. I have given money before.....but you can't always donate.....cause then you would need to start begging for money.
