Who said: "Intelligence is the ability to adapt to new situations"?

Many years ago while studying Philosophy I came accross this quote. I believe it was a famous Sociologist but I can't remember his name. A the years go by, I believe more and more that he was right. I would like to read more of his works.

I don't know who said this but ,in my experience, intelligent people see and create new opportunities for themselves rather than adapt to situations.

I did not know that someone actually said that ,I can certainly see the wisdom for many in those words though.
