If you're looking for a bargain basement computer with no room to grow, then buy one of the Dells you see advertised on the Web or TV. If you dig into to the details you'll see that if you want a computer with the ability to upgrade, no matter who you buy from you're gonna' spend a lot more than $400. You have to remember that Dell or any computer manufacturer does not make the parts, they only put the computers together and ship them out the door. The questions you should be asking yourself is who will offer me the best support for my dollar. Who will offer me the most computer for my money. You don't want to have a couple of big cartons show up on your doorstep and find out that you can't get ahold of someone for a warranty or support question. Nor do you want to learn after the fact that you have no room to upgrade your computer and have to buy new in two years. Consider who will be using the machine and what it will be used for. Word processing, web surfing, e-mail, etc., don't require much computer while digital photography, ripping music, watching movies, etc., require a lot. Don't rush into this and research all of your options. Also, do yourself a favor and look into other makes than Dell.

I am a Dell tech and all day i work on dell and gateway computers, between the two, Dell and Gateway (gutway), the gateway breaks down much more often. I know Dell had problems with thier gx 260, 270, and some 280's. If you all have any problem feel free to email or send me an IM . I just might be able to help.

Dell is just another OEM computer made to look decent, but the truth is all OEM computers are JUNK..... Dell, Gateway, HP etc...

They fool the consumer by boasting a 2GHZ - 3GHZ speed.
People think this makes all the difference so they buy it thinking they are getting a fast computer.

NOT!!

Chances are your L2 cache is 1/2 if not a 1/4 of what it should be, and your ram is the low speed ddr, at 256MB PC2100, 166MHZ.

In short they tell you how fast the processor is but not how much data it can move at that speed.

A perfect example a P3 1GHZ will smoke a Celeron 2.0GHZ believe it or not!

I own a PC troubleshooting business and I have the strangest encounters with Dell computers. Both laptops and Desktops. Computers from 1999 to newly bought systems. The hardware they use doesn't always work smoothly with Windows XP. I'm sorry you are having a hard time. I like the Sony VAIO systems. Both desktops and laptops.

I have two different Dells--they are excellent computers and I have had excellent customer service. My daughter spilled something on her keyboard and they replaced it for free, with no "accident" warrantee. I wasn't expecting that! So I have only good things to say about my personal experiences with Dell.

I dont agree with you, i have a dell dimension 3000, and i had a problem with it when i got it, called customer service and after a week they sent someone to repair it, i find that to be great since i live in Honduras, and i think nobody else does that. So far no problems with it, love it! :D
