Ditto the answer about the mesh/textile gear. I won't lie--- it positively sucks wearing that gear if you're standing around in a parking lot, but if you're moving over 15mph you'll be just fine as the holes in the mesh breathe extremely well. Your only choices for real protective gear are leather or textile, and while the perforated variety of leathers will breathe too, they don't generally have the padding (usually kevlar!) that the textile gear does. Both leather and textile will keep your skin where it belongs if you and the bike part ways unexpectedly but the padding will really soften the impact. Imagine hitting the pavement at even 20mph--- elbows first! Yikes! And don't forget the gloves and a full-face helmet (or at least a 3/4 helmet). You'd be surprised how many people take the trouble to gear up then leave their poor hands naked! If you skin up your palms, it'll be amazingly painful (so I'm told) and you can actually lose a LOT of blood that way.
Almost as good are "Draggin Jeans" (http://www.dragginjeans.com/Jeans.htm) which look like regular jeans but are lined with kevlar and you can upgrade them to include padding. I personally don't think they breathe very well and it's really unpleasant if you get caught in the rain in them, but they're still waaaay better than regular jeans. They make jackets too but personally, I think the textile is the way to go.
Most regular jeans (even Levi's) are worthless in a crash at even moderate speed as they'll shred quickly and leave nothing between your skin and the pavement..
PS--- you ROCK for asking this question. It upsets/annoys/scares me to see so many ding-a-lings out there on their bikes in shorts and those dinky little brain-bucket half-helmets. It's really nice to see more responsible adults on motorcycles!

Joe Rocket Santa Fe Jacket. Comes with armor, is part perfed leather and the rest textile. Also uses an optional rain liner, which for Savannah Summer afternoons is mandatory.
Joe Rocket discontinued the jacket so you can pick them up cheap on ebay.

First of all, a helmet. It doesn't matter how hot it is, wear one. As for clothes, the tougher the better. Denem works well, and definately wear gloves. You can get gloves with breathing holes, by the way. Get some shoes or boots with Gortex in them and that are tough. The Gortex is waterproof but still breaths. I would imagine a windbreaker is better than nothing, and often times they have breather holes under the armpits.

FirstGear makes an AMAZING mesh jacket, once you're moving you'll forget you're even wearing it (and I ride in the South in the summer too, so I'm with you on the HOT and HUMID). They also have pants that match, but I don't personally own them so I can't attest to their comfort. The jacket comes with built in armor, which is protective yet lightweight and breathable. VERY nice!

Textile jackets should work great as well as some vented pants, the address below is my favorite road gear company, good jackets as well as the superduty pant should work great. Also the main reason helmets are expensive is saftey, but also the more cash you spend, the better venting you get.

Try the mesh/textile jackets. They offer serious protection. My friend went down in one and never scratched him or the jacket. They have vents to open up. Find them a www.ridegear.com
