Before answering your question, I have read all the postings before me, so whatever written there, my response is considering those views as well.

The Language "Hindi" is not difficult at all, even by staying here and not having proper learning, you can atleast speak and understand Hindi very well in 3 months times, if you are serious about it.

Still, if you have thought of learning it properly, you must take proper coaching to learn and enjoy the richness and beauty of the language thoroughly.

To learn Hindi in its appropriate accent and stay at a place, safe and cheap, you should select a destination in North India, preferably in and around Delhi. In Delhi, you get all budget places to stay ( avoid Paharganj in Delhi) and the cost of living is quite subsidised matching the quality of life, when compared to most of other places. Delhi is called mini India and you get all domestic and international tastes, colours, shades, flavours......in Delhi. The place is extremely well connected with rest of India/World by all possible modes of transport and communication. Medical and other facilities are latest and available 24x7.

A few words for better stay, if possible try wearing local dresses - they are very nice, economic and suits everyone. Develop taste for local food - you can always adjust the levels of spices and cooking oils. Drink sealed bottled water with ISI or FPO mark. Delhi has severity of weather in peak of its seasons, So have suitable clothing during your stay. Don't flaunt your travel documents and cash in public. Seek police assistance, even speaking to the Commissioner of Police, if needed -don't hesitate. Avoid Pre-conceived bad notions, if any, and follow the famous phrase - Do as the Romans do in Rome.

Have a comfortable stay and happy learning.

I hate to break it to you but Hindi is an rather difficult language to learn. The verbs are placed at the end of sentences so you have to rethink how to form sentences. In Hindi one says "The store to I went". And grammar is not easy. Pronunciation is weird, but not hard to learn, and there are a thousands of dialects.

And most westerners don't learn any if only a tad because virtually everyone in India speaks English. If you are totally committed anyone will accommodate you. There are many schools in Varanasi, Beneres (Dance, music and yoga) I would imagine they also tech Hindi. Ask when you arrive in Delhi.

Virtually every place in India is cheap. I can live there for $10 a day, that's hotels, food, travel, clothes, gifts everything (actually it $20 a day for my girlfriend and I). If you are going to stay for extended period then you can rent a small house, hotel room, etc, by the week or month and it should cost $100-200 a month. If you like beaches go to Goa. I am sure if you have the money to pay, you can find a good Hindi teacher any place in India.

If it was me i would find a place I really like..Richikesh, Goa, Manali, and on and on. I would find a place to rent long term. Then I would just let the word out you need someone to teach you Hindi!

I would suspect that if you like languages and pick up languages and really study in a year you just might be "Sob Cuch Malag-ing" all day long in about a year. "Sob cuch malaga" means "Anything is possible" and it is my motto for India.
Good Luck

These days you can learn how to speak Hindi over the internet. Check out this online course, it's voted as the best Hindi online course of all time: http://www.rocketlearner.com/hindi The course is very easy to follow, I was able to learn Hindi in just 3 months.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a Hindi language teacher but that would have cost me over $800 per month. Good thing with this internet, $800 it's a lot of money for me.

Sorry I do not agree wih helpaneed....New Delhi is quite expensive and very busy and conjested, I love Delhi; but for a long term stay it's out of the question. And Hindi is not a very easy language to lear, Spanish is an easy language to learn. Ok..it's not Sanskrit to be sure that takes many years, still. He is correct about the dialect in the North...Richikesh might be ideal..In North very calm..should be very cheap..In fact some Ashrams let you stay for free if you are willing to help out!

No body knows Hindi in India too. Hindi is lost in India. so many kinds of Hindi is spoken in India. You can start speaking your own Hindi.

Well to learn Hindi you have to born in India. Don't worry, though English people left India but left English in India. the EDUCATED people in India don't speak Hindi. They feel ashamed to do that. They speak better English than British and Americans. So to visit India learn good English.
