If they become very famous and popular the most money comes from writing songs. the likes of Paul McCartney are worth millions of pounds most of which came from song writing royalties to make money as a backing musician is hard if u are not really exceptional or become very adept at playing an unusual instrument there are hundreds of good guitarists around but very few who can make lots of money out of it then u have 2 innovate not just churn out other peoples riffs all the time. People like Stevie vai and Joe Satriani were innovaters and can still cut it as can my old fave Joe walsh ,Don,t get me wrong tho there will always I hope! be a place in music for good old rock/ blues players like Gary Moore keep on practicing and good luck hope u make it big go 4 it

it is extremely rare that a music artist will make much at all, now days especially with music piracy (wich i strongly fight against) even when a band sell's an album generally they make about 1 dollar an album, the record companies use the artists dream against them to cash in, they can make alot of money if they are extremely popular, they make money at concerts, selling band merchandise ect.

most bands that actually make good money are sell outs.... and thats awful (and why i dont listen to them) its also very difficult to become so famous. odds are you should keep it just as a hobby but if you get a big break go for it!

Well you have to be really good in order to make a good amount of money. But I wouldn't count on it as your only source of income. Try it for a hobby.
